Recent studies done during the current economic conditions indicate that when shippers switch their 3PL providers one of the major reasons is that the 3PL is not listening to their customer. When products move problems will arise. The majority of these issues could be avoided or greatly mitigated by developing the right set of measurements and metrics. Whatever a 3PL offers in services they need to be able to deliver. The scope needs to be clearly defined and measurements to show deliverables established.

A strong partnership between shipper (customer) and their 3PL (provider) has to be developed for both to be successful. Each participant in the partnership has its own set of synergies. By maximizing these synergies, the right third party provider can deliver to the customer quality service, speedy response and accurate metrics that can in turn result in higher turns with less inventory which contributes to positive perceptions by the end customer.
